The ongoing strike by Ondo State lecturers necessitates more robust measures from the government. While the Governor’s intentions are laudable, the steps taken are half-hearted.
A comprehensive solution is required to address the deep-seated problems in the higher education sector. The state should reconsider its plans for a new university at Owo and contemplate establishing a separate ministry for higher education.
The current education managers, though possibly overwhelmed, must be held accountable for failing to advise the Governor effectively on the new ASUU agreement.
The funding issue and arrears payment should have been settled following the conclusion of the ASUU agreement.
The state should abide by the agreement without attempting to reopen negotiations. Failure to address the strike promptly will lead to severe repercussions, including the exodus of highly skilled lecturers from Ondo State – this we are already experiencing in Akungba. Governor Aiyedatiwa needs to take decisive action in the interest of Ondo people.
