BEYOND THE CRITICISM: HOW BOLA MOGAJI HAS SUPPORTED THE KWARA KIDDIES LEAGUE

By Ibrahim Jatto | Chief Operating Officer, Kwara Kiddies League

In a society where public figures are often judged by criticism and controversy, acknowledging their positive contributions can sometimes be mistaken for praise singing. Yet, when you have personally benefited from someone’s support, telling that story is a matter of honesty and gratitude.

For me, that person is Malam Bolakale Mogaji, Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission. My account is not an attempt to portray him as a perfect public official or dismiss criticism of his administration. It is a personal testimony of his support for the Kwara Kiddies League and its mission to nurture young football talents.

From Patron to Genuine Supporter

Our relationship with Mogaji began in 2022 when we visited his office to invite him to become the league’s patron. He embraced the vision and performed the competition’s first official kick-off during a match between Kwara Football Academy and Honeyking.

Since then, his support has remained consistent. He has attended our grand finales, facilitated ₦1 million in support from the Kwara State Government last season and repeatedly advocated for the league before His Excellency. He has also invited influential personalities to watch the children play, helping us connect with people who can contribute to the project’s growth.

What stands out, however, is that Mogaji has become more than a patron. He is a genuine fan who sometimes sits among grassroots spectators to enjoy the football rather than limiting his presence to official ceremonies. His interest in the league goes beyond appearances; he follows its activities and takes a keen interest in the players.

A few months ago, he encountered three of our players at the British Embassy. He was visibly excited to see them, took photographs with the youngsters and supported their pursuit of visa opportunities for trials in the United Kingdom. For me, that moment reflected an interest not just in watching the children play, but also in seeing them progress.

Support That Goes Beyond Words

Last weekend’s distribution of football boots donated by the Taiwo Awoniyi Foundation provided another example of his commitment. During our preparations, Mogaji offered us the use of the newly renovated indoor sports hall at the stadium. He also arrived before the event began and joined us in distributing the boots to the players.

His presence and participation meant a great deal to us. I also recall a late-night telephone call during which he connected me to conversations that could open new opportunities for our players.

In recognition of his contributions, we introduced the Player of the Week award in his name this season. It is our way of acknowledging someone who has consistently made time and created opportunities for a grassroots initiative.

Appreciation Is Not Acquittal

I am aware that Mogaji has faced criticism, including concerns about the level of support for football under his leadership. Public office must remain open to scrutiny, and my personal experience does not invalidate the concerns of others.

However, accountability should not prevent us from acknowledging positive contributions. Appreciation is not acquittal, and gratitude is not surrender.

My testimony speaks only to what I have witnessed: his encouragement, his presence at our events, his advocacy for the league and his willingness to help connect our young players with opportunities.

Grassroots football requires more than talent and enthusiasm. Young players need equipment, exposure, access to facilities and connections that can help them take the next step. Support from sports administrators and other stakeholders can make a meaningful difference in turning their ambitions into possibilities.

A Simple Thank You

Malam Bolakale Mogaji, thank you for believing in our vision, supporting our activities and helping bring influential people closer to the Kwara Kiddies League. Thank you for recognising the
